Skunks are the easiest to identify because the predominant black and white striping and, of course, their odor. Skunks, or Mephitis mephitis which translated in Latin means, “bad odor” are phenomenal diggers. They prefer to burrow and make their den under areas like ground level decks, front porches, sheds, and thick bushes. Noticeable damage to lawns will be from “grubbing” and the obvious odor from close interaction with domestic animals when skunks feel threatened and spray.
